Local or Online? The Marketing Playbook Is Completely Different

The biggest marketing mistake we see is a local business being run like an online one, or vice versa. They look similar from the outside — a website, some Google, some social — but the levers that actually bring customers are different. Work out which you are first.

Local business: you win a map, not a country

If customers come from a town or a radius — trades, salons, garages, dentists, cafés, local shops — your whole game is local. The prize is the Google Map Pack and a stack of recent reviews. Your website needs a page for each service and each town you cover.

Ads, if you run them, are Local Services Ads and local Search — pay to appear when someone nearby searches right now.

Online business: you win search intent, nationwide

If you sell or serve anywhere — an online store, a course, a service delivered remotely — being 'near me' means nothing. The prize is buyer-intent search across the whole country: product and category pages that match exactly what people type when they're ready to buy.

Your Google presence isn't a Business Profile — it's Google Merchant Center and a product feed, powering Shopping listings. Ads are Shopping and Performance Max, not Local Services.

The quick test

  • Does 'near me' apply to you? Local. Does it not? Online.
  • Do you want the phone to ring, or a checkout to complete? That decides your calls-to-action.
  • Is your prize the Map Pack, or the Shopping carousel? Pick one and aim everything at it.

Why it matters

Run the wrong playbook and you pour effort into levers that can't move for your model — a local shop chasing nationwide keywords it can't win, or an online store collecting 'area' pages no one searches.
